From Joe: Analog v Digital Audio

John,

Could you forward this to our group?  The article link address I've copied and pasted below.

He discusses analog audio vs. Digital, and apparently intends a follow up article next issue regarding film vs. digital video.

Very interesting.

Best,
Joe

The new iMac has a fantastic 5K display but it’s also an extremely powerful computer in its own right. It may even be all the computer you need for video editing. We look at the benchmarks.

From Barbara: Regarding multiple exposures

Hi all
re multi-exposures
see below from a friend re exhibit at Museum of the City of New York
Barbara Nelson

I have just seen a fantastic photography exhibit at The Museum of The City of New York by Jeff Chien-Hsing Liao entitled “New York  Assembled Realities”.

The photographer has created multiple exposures into large composited panorama photographs of New York City sometimes to include 400 images.

It is worth a visit to see how he has turned these scenes into new views, scenes that a person would not be able to take in as a single shot.
This exhibit runs until February 15, 2015.

While you are at the museum also stop and look at “Letters To Afar”, a video art installation, by the artist, Peter Forgacs, who has taken home movies made by Polish Jews who returned to visit their homeland to document that visit with their families and the small towns they left behind. The movies were taken in the 1920s and 1930s.
Very poignant and takes a bit adjusting to the many screens which are separated into different stories and spoken words.
This exhibit runs until March 22, 2015.
Enjoy and get the inspiration!

How Much Do Editorial Clients Pay?

Hi John:

In light of the conversation at the last Brain Trust, I though this would interest you.

http://pdnpulse.pdnonline.com/2014/07/much-editorial-clients-pay-wiki-gives-names-fees.html

How Much Do Editorial Clients Pay? “Wiki” Gives Names and Fees

Editorial clients are reluctant to publicize information about rates for photo assignments. But photographers need to know who pays what, in order to figure out which clients are worth shooting for, and to help them negotiate assignment fees.
A Tumblr site called Who Pays Photographers? helps bridge the information gap with a wiki-inspired spreadsheet listing fees paid by numerous publications, both online and in print. The site also provides information about whether the client pays expenses, how long they take to pay, and what photographers like and dislike about the client. All the information is uploaded anonymously by photographers who have shot assignments for the clients.
But users, beware. The spreadsheet, which lists clients more or less in alphabetical order, is disorganized, and a challenge to scroll through (and it can’t be downloaded). The client list is long but not exhaustive, updates are infrequent, and some of the reports are several years old. Moreover, the information provided is unverified.
Still, Who Pays Photographers? can be a useful starting point. Photographer Anastasia Pottinger says she came across it when she was trying to figure out what to charge photo blogs to publish her portraits of centenarians, after the project went viral.
“[The site] gave me a better idea of what to expect.  I had read a few blog posts out there where people were getting $150 per image and maybe that’s true when it’s just one image, but I was not sure what to charge for a whole set of images,” she says. For online publication rights to ten of her images, she says she negotiated a $375 fee from Huffington Post, after Huffington Postasked (as it usually does) to publish the images for free.
The anonymous owner of Who Pays Photographers? said in an email that he (or she?) is a working editorial photographer, with limited time to maintain, improve or promote the site. (The Who Pays Photographers? Twitter feed and archive were last updated in February.) “I welcome input and any help in running” the site, the owner says.  See our earlier Q&A with the owner for more information.

Cinematographer Gordon Willis ASC, RIP

From Joe Goldman 5/19. 2014:

Posted by Doug Hart....My FaceBook posting today :

"I just found out that Cinematographer Gordon Willis ASC, died this morning, of cancer, 12 days short of his 83rd Birthday. Gordon's son, Gordon Jr., phoned me with the sad news, and asked me to spread the word here on FaceBook.

Gordon Willis was, of course, best known for his work as Director of Photography on the 'Godfather I, II, and III,' and also such films as 'All the President's Men,' 'Manhattan,' 'Annie Hall,' 'Klute,' 'Presumed Innocent,' 'Zelig,' 'The Parallax View,' 'The Paper Chase,' 'Little Murders,' and many others.

Gordon's first feature was 'End of the Road,' in 1970, and his last film before retirement was 'The Devil's Own,' in 1997, 30 years of incredible Cinematography.

I was lucky enough to have worked with Gordon as his 1st Camera Assistant for ten films in ten years, basically the decade of the 1980's, and a handful of commercials between the features. I also did a few days on 'Manhattan,' and about 2 weeks on 'Windows,' which Gordon Directed as well as photographed.

Many people, including me, feel that Gordon was ignored for far too long by the Oscars - he did not get nominated for any of the 'Godfather' films, or 'Manhattan,' or 'Annie Hall,' or 'Klute,' and in fact his ONLY nomination for Cinematography (and he didn't win) was for 'Zelig,' one of the Woody Allen films than I worked with him on. (I was later reminded that Goprdon WAS nominated for the Best Cinematography Oscar for 'Godfather III," but did not win.)

After news of the nomination came, he said to me, "Of all the films to get nominated for, they picked 'Zelig?' We only made half a movie - the rest was stock footage, and the rest of the footage I deliberately screwed up, to make it look like an old, faded, and scratched newsreel !!"

Gordon finally did receive a "Lifetime Achievement " Oscar, a few years after he retired. I'll be posting more about Gordon, and more photos.

But the Cinema world has lost one of its shining stars and greatest masters, as far as I am concerned.

No news yet about services or a memorial, but as I hear it, I will post here. R.I.P Gordon Willis, Master Cinematographer, my friend and mentor."

Doug Hart
