I like the new Sigma approach to taking on Canon especially in coming up with competing or better niche lenses that do not exist. Example are the 18 - 300mm C lens and the 150- 600mm C lens that is under $1000. Great company to watch.

FINE ART GALLERY RESEARCH
From Susan May Tell
There are a hundred (probably more) photo galleries in Manhattan. It really comes down to your researching galleries to see which ones show work you like and fit with. There isn’t any ASMP-friendly-gallery-list. Galleries are in business to make money and each gallerist establishes their brand for whom their audience is or wants it to be. Two great sources for photography exhibitions:

340 Haven Ave. (#3J)
New York, NY 10033The question most asked among visual artists of all genres and experience is “What should I charge”. This seminar will help you frame some guidelines.
For many still and motion photographers, pricing commercial assignments and fine art work has become a blind guessing game where you lose if you’re too high or if you’re too low. And, when you ask about pricing the answer always seems to be “it depends.” How can you figure out the fair market value of your work or what clients really want and value when it’s so hard to get answers?
In this exciting new seminar, Judy Herrmann tackles this question by sharing case studies, interviews and examples that will help you understand pricing from your clients’ and collectors’ perspectives, providing actionable tips you can start using right away, and showing you how to maximize your value and get paid what you’re worth. Time will be scheduled for Q&A.
Limited to 50 people.
FEE: $45.00 for PWP and ASMP Members, $55 for Non-Members

RECOMMENDATION - BOOK: "You are a Badass”
I wanted to share my book recommendation from this week’s Blue Moon meeting, but don’t believe that I can post to the blog. It’s called, “You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero. It’s a quick read, funny and inspiring. I’ve also been enjoying listening to it as an audiobook. It’s a really positive take on getting out of your own way to accomplish your goals. Good for a photo business and life in general.
Here’s a link to her web site and amazon:

Book Recommendation: Vision and Art, the Biology of Seeing
Book Recommendation: Vision and Art, the Biology of Seeing by Margaret Livingstone
The Late Great National Geographic photographer Galen Rowell was obsessive about our method of "seeing" and how it translates to perception of photographs. This is a great book.
See the Amazon review below. I got mine in paperback for $19.95 at Amazon.
JA
Now in paperback, this groundbreaking study by Harvard neurobiologist Margaret Livingstone explores the inner workings of vision, demonstrating that how we see art depends ultimately on the cells in our eyes and our brains. In Vision and Art, Livingstone explains how great painters fool the brain: why Mona Lisa s smile seems so mysterious, Monet s Poppy Field appears to sway in the breeze, Mondrian s Broadway Boogie Woogie blinks like the lights of Times Square, and Warhol s Electric Chair pulses with current. Drawing on history and her own cutting- edge discoveries, Livingstone offers intriguing insights, from explanations of common optical illusions, to speculations on the correlation of learning disabilities with artistic skill. By skillfully bridging the space between science and art, Vision and Art will both arm artists and designers with new techniques that they can use in their own craft, and thrill any reader with an interest in the biology of human vision.
